November 26, 2014

I cried tears of happiness this morning. What I experienced was something that was so special I can't describe in words. I'll try, but it wouldn't even come close with how I feel. And it all just hit me this morning. Let me start by thanking all the wonderful people in the team like Karim the wonderful weddingplanner, Sarah and Lanie who took such good care of me. And of course a HUGE, HUGE thank you for having me princess Maha Abdulaziz and Prince Abdulaziz. What I experienced was heaven!

So, I will start my story here. Story, I can better say fairytale. About one month I ago I got a call from my agency if I would like to draw portraits on the wedding of Princess Maha. She saw my work and would like me to be a part of the wedding. After hanging up I was jumping up and down, bouncing through the room. Let me say this about the wedding: I was expecting things of course, but THIS! It was unbelievable.

So here's a little photo diary.

Last week I started my trip to Saudi Arabia. It's already a super special experience that I can enter Saudi Arabia as a woman. Believe me, you won't get into Saudi Arabia if you have no business being there (especially women). My trip went to Riyadh with a short stop in Dubai.

Arriving at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. My parents brought me. They were very nervous for me going to Saudi, as was I!!

We drank and ate something, hung around, watched some airplanes come and go by standing at the rooftop of Schiphol and after that it was already time for me to check in and then my super exciting trip started. I traveled with Emirates Airlines. Superdeluxe!

Arriving at Dubai Airport. Everything is shiny and glittery etc. It's such a beautiful airport. Did some shopping before I had to leave for Riyadh. And what is more fun to spot your own work at the magazine store in Dubai? It all felt like it was my birthday :P
I made illustrations for this month's InStyle magazine (USA). I'll post this later on my blog. Then boarding for the flight to Riyadh. Ok, to be honest, I was pretty nervous about this. As a woman there are certain rules you have to obey. Before entering the airplane I made sure to wear my Abaya and a headscarf. I noticed that there were hardly any women on the airplane. Almost only businessmen and some families. Women all covered up of course. When arriving at Riyadh I was pretty nervous standing between only men and I had to let them check my visa. Of course I had a big plus as my visa said: Personal visit HRH Prince Abdulaziz BABAAS. Big plus! The team arranged somebody that was coming to pick me up. Everything went very smooth and the ''personal driver'' I got was such a funny man! We couldn't understand each other as his English was very limited and I don't speak or understand Arabic language. But with gestures it went pretty well :P

Then arriving at the hotel. The people from the hotel were so very nice to me and my room was so nice. With two kingsize beds. You know when you see in movies people jumping from one side of the bed to the other side of the bed.. Yeah..

So, then I had a quick rest as I didn't sleep at all the whole trip. I don't know what it is but I just can't sleep in airplanes. And after a quick rest it was time for me to meet the princess!!! Oh lord, oh lord. I was so nervous. You can't even imagine. The driver drove me to their private castle. Arriving there there was a huge, huge team setting the whole scene up. OMG! It was like entering an amusement parc. Everything was so huge and big and huge and big, and HUGE!!! and BIG!!! I felt like I was going to faint. So many gorgeous gardens with the most exotic trees and huge halls. Really a 1001 nights fairytale. I made one picture of one of the halls. They were still building in this hall, but here's a quick impression of one of the halls.

So after meeting the princess and the wonderful team and Karim (the weddingplanner), it was time for me to go back to the hotel and rest some more. Before I knew it, it was there: The BIG day! I was so nervous. I also was nervous for me being not able to hold my pencils as this is such a-once-in-a-lifetime-experience. At 7 pm I arrived at the private castle again. Big shock! The whole team was running and stressing as Riyadh was expecting a storm that evening. I felt so sad and sorry for the Prince and Princess as they have been living up for this event for one whole year. They have been planning this thing for so long, but the storms here can be very dangerous. So the whole event had to change in one day! As most of the event was set up outside, with the gardens and fountains and waterfalls, this all had to be closed. There was time to set up one room inside. The whole event had to be changed because of the rain and storm. The guestlist had be downsized big time. It was such a shame. But nevertheless, even if it was now only in one room, it was a gorgeous space! I could only dream to have a wedding like that!
Here's a quick impression of the room.

I wasn't allowed to make pictures of the princes and princesses. So this is the only picture I am going to share with you. There was a professional team that made pictures of the princesses and princes. This was such a unique experience. I will never forget this.

I will tell you a bit more about the wedding itself even though I can't describe in words how beautiful it was. The princesses looked all so gorgeous. They were wearing the most expensive couture and jewellery. I was a bit (LOT!!!) jealous. Ofcourse I knew that this wasn't going to be an average wedding, but I wasn't expecting this. Everybody looked so, so, so gorgeous. Beautiful faces and hair everywhere. Make up pretty, hair pretty, dress pretty. Pretty everything.

And then around midnight, the bride came in. OMG. OMG. OMG. I died. And I died some more. I literally felt tears coming up. This moment was so, so pretty. I get goosebumps while writing this. She looked drop-dead-gorgeous. She's a babe! Killed it! A dream coming true. Then she walked over to her prince and everybody looked so happy. It was a moment filled with tears.

So I started to draw portraits around 8 pm and I finished around 4 am in the morning. I was exhausted but so happy! I drew so many guests, I felt like I was missing a pair of hands.

Then it was time for me to go back to the hotel. Just totally overwhelmed by this whole experience. I still can't believe that they asked me. It's just all so unreal. I don't think you even know how happy and thankful I am for this all. I really had an amazing time and I think I'll be talking about this for a long, long, LONG!! time.

Yesterday it was time for me to go home. The driver came and pick me up and drove me to the airport. At the airport Abdullah was there to guide me. He's such a funny, warm and wonderful person.

Here's a quick selfie.

And here I am right now. Back to the ''normal life'' again.
Thanks again so much for having me. You don't even know how happy it makes me.
Thanks again to the amazing team and prince and princess. You rock!!!

Here's a quick look into this month's L'Officiel. I'm so proud of it!
There's a small interview and in the middle of the magazine you can find all the illustrations.
I made 10 illustrations for this editorial called ''Promenade''.
I'll post the whole editorial next week.

First things first: I'm going on a very, very exciting and nerve wrecking trip.
I'll leave tomorrow. You can follow me on Instagram.
Feeling a bit nervous, but I guess that's normal for a project this size.
Keep an eye out on my blog or Instagram.
I'm planning on making a little diary of this very special and exciting visit.
All I can say right now is that I'm so thankful for being asked.
When I'm back, I'm planning on writing the whole story.
See you on Instagram?
